Gaze Into the Future of Memphis When You Attend This Themed Art Exhibit on Tuesday

In celebration of the 2019 bicentennial of Memphis and Shelby County, ArtsMemphis is proud to announce a special exhibition of visual art by local Memphis artists in the ArtsMemphis gallery. The exhibition theme is Unfolding: The Next Chapter in Memphis and speaks to the progression of artists, as well as the progression of Memphis in the 200 years the city has existed. Be sure to check it out this Tuesday, January 7th!

The exhibit is curated by Memphian Kenneth Wayne Alexander, a local artist who fuses traditional acrylic, anime and digital art styles to create a new vision he calls NOVI. An alumnus of Overton High School, Alexander displayed an evident passion for creating at a young age. As NOVI, Alexander engages communities by directly involving them in project and studio processes.

Other exhibitions curated by Alexander include Surreal Kingdoms, a compelling video installation in conjunction with The Art of Video Games at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art; Frame Traps at Crosstown Arts about the importance of youth development within gaming; and Vanguard Wonderland at the Orange Mound Gallery, detailing the power of women on Earth. Alexander has traveled the US expanding his talent, exhibition prowess and narrative to better himself and others through the power of art.

ArtsMemphis works to sustain Memphis’ world-renowned cultural vitality and strengthen local communities through the arts. In 2019, ArtsMemphis awarded 164 grants to 72 local arts groups and artists, totaling $2.5 million. ArtsMemphis envisions a Memphis in which every individual feels pride in our city’s authentic cultural assets and experiences the impact of the arts in their lives.

This exhibit is supported by an ArtsFirst grant from First Tennessee Foundation. The exhibit will be open to the public until January 10, 2020, so don’t forget to stop by ArtsMemphis! To learn more about the exhibit, please visit www.artsmemphis.org.
